“It’s gonna be hard…,” Twitter India head tweets after government bashing

NEW DELHI: A day after the government bashed Twitter for failing to comply with the new IT rules in India, Twitter India Managing Director Manish Maheshwari tweeted a poster which reads, "It's going to be hard, but hard does not mean impossible.” The Delhi Police is investigating the “Congress Toolkit” case in which Twitter had marked a tweet by a BJP leader as "manipulated media".
Teams of Delhi Police Special Cell visited offices of Twitter in Delhi-NCR earlier this week. However, the offices were shut due to the ongoing pandemic. Twitter in it’s statement termed it as “intimidation tactics” by the Delhi Police and “expressed concerns” about the safety of its employees in India.

Later that day, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeiTY) termed the statements made by Twitter as totally baseless and an attempt to defame the country.
Also, the Delhi Police told media that Maheshwari isn’t cooperating with the investigation and taking "a path of evasiveness instead”.
“Its latest statements are devised to seek dubious sympathy when they themselves not only refuse to comply with the law of the land but also claim possession of material evidence but refuse to share it with legal authority duly recognised,” said Delhi Police.
Coming down heavily on Twitter, the government said that it is not Twitter’s responsibility to protect free speech in India. It warned Twitter that it needs to stop beating around the bush and comply with the laws of the land.
“Law making and policy formulations is the sole prerogative of the sovereign and Twitter is just a social media platform and it has no locus in dictating what India's legal policy framework should be,” said the IT ministry in its statement.
The ministry also said that despite being a significant social media company (with 1.75 crore registered users) in India, “Twitter representatives in India routinely claim that they have no authority and that they and the people of India need to escalate everything to the Twitter Headquarter in the USA.”
